Caring for Pearls
|
| |
There are a few basic principles to remember when it comes to caring for your pearls. Pearls are much softer than hard gemstones and can be easily scratched. Beacause they contain organic material and water, pearls can crack if exposed to excessive dryness. In addition, acids and other chemicals can easily damage pearls.

To protect pearls:
* Store pearls in a soft cloth pouch, separate from metallic necklaces. * Never clean pearls in an ultrasonic cleaner. Vibrations can shatter pearls. * Do not use chemical cleaners, especially those containing ammonia or bleach. * Remove pearls before applying perfume or hairspray. * Do not wear pearls in swimming pools with chlorinated water.

To keep pearls looking beautiful:
* Wipe with a soft cloth after wearing. * Wash occasionally in mild soapy water; contrary to popular belief, the acidic oils and perspiration from human skin can damage the surface of a pearl.
